Portinscale

a potted history

Portinscale is situated on the north west corner of Lake Derwentwater to the west of Keswick and is set amidst the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District. This settlement which lies at one end of the Borrowdale Valley is linked with Castlerigg Stone Circle at Keswick because of a find of early stone tools dating back to the Neolithic period. The name Portinscale curiously means 'The Harlots Hut'
