Over Whinlatter
Directions
The first real challenge comes when you leave High Lorton: the uphill slog to Whinlatter, the first section of which is unremitting, until you join the B5292 on the Whinlatter Pass.
You should bear right along the forest track, then first left along the wide track, ignoring other routes to the right. This takes you over rough terrain for a couple of kilometres before coming out on the B5292, at which point go left then right for the Whinlatter Visitor Centre (if for any reason the off-road track is closed, as it was when I last cycled the C2C, continue along the road to the visitor centre).
You are in the heart of England's only mountain forest. Because of the pure mountain air a sanatorium used to stand in the Whinlatter Forest. Sailors with TB and other communicable diseases were kept there in isolation. Beyond the visitor centre, pictured below, the route goes sharp right down a forest track to Thornthwaite, commanding some stunning views of Bassenthwaite Lake.
Take time, weather permitting, to admire Blencathra, Skiddaw and, over to the right, Helvellyn.
There is now an extensive range of mountain bike routes and Whinlatter is fast becoming the hub for northern Lakeland off-roading.
Also leave yourself enough time to have a good look around the visitor centre. There's a wealth of forest habitat information, a fine tea room and shop. www.forestry.gov.uk/whinlatterhome 017687 78469
After Thornthwaite the route links up with the Workington to Keswick alternative, via Braithwaite and Portinscale, where there are some charming accommodation possibilities.

Our fully equipped workshop and shop is at the top of the first major challenge (climb) on your C2C. We can fix, fettle & check over any mechanical issue you may have on your bike. We also have a well stocked shop that supplies power gels, tubes or anything else you may have forgotten. Unfortunately we don't stock new legs! Alternatively , feel free to pop in for a chat, a free brew or directions. whinlatter@cyclewisetraining.co.uk or tel: 017687 78711
