River at Lorton

Directions

Merging of the routes to Lorton

Whether you have come up the disused railway line from Whitehaven or joined the main cycle route from Egremont, the next stage sees you cut through Cleator Moor and rejoin the old railway heading towards Rowrah and Kirkland. Beyond Rowrah turn left onto the lane and right at the school. You wil soon pass Fel dyke where you fol ow the signs for Lamplugh and Loweswater.

In about 5km you wil be skirting the Loweswater lake, your first glimpse of the Lakes and a wonderful spot to take pictures or stop for a snack. Beyond is the picturesque vil age of Loweswater, complete with church and village inn; a delightful place to stop if you are really taking your time, or are on foot. Head left at Loweswater, up the lane through Thackthwaite and soon you wil cross the River Cocker at Low Lorton, passing through Lorton Vale and into High Lorton. This is a truly picturesque Northern Lakes vil age to spend a night.

On Arrival

Alfred Wainwright, Britain's most famous walking hero and pioneer of the outdoors, regarded this area, with its deeply gouged valleys reached from the passes of Whinlatter, Honister and Newlands, as his favourite spot. Lorton is only about 5km south of Cockermouth, so it is also an optional diversion for those who have decided to start their journey from Workington. To reach New House (see p.28) on the B5289: Carry on straight through Loweswater for 3km on the road parallel with the route:

Turn right onto the B5289 at the cross-roads just beyond the Lorton bridge. It's only 2km from the route.

Winder Hall Country House, Low Lorton, Cockermouth, Cumbria CA13 9UP

Beautiful hide-away location in a historic manor house just off C2C. Now a popular stopping off point for sandwiches and coffee mid-morning before the tough climb up Whinlatter. Also proving popular for afternoon teas. Those who like to take things easy might care to make this a stopping off point. Indeed, not a bad overnight for anyone coming back along the Reivers (about 3 miles south of the route down the B5292). The rooms are very pretty and the food is organic and excellent.
