Cockermouth
& Embleton
a potted history
Cockermouth is a delightful market town full of Georgian architecture as well being the birthplace of William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian. One of only two Gem Towns in the Lake District (the other being Whitehaven), Cockermouth has being important since Roman times and has a long history of literary and artistic connections. The town has a good range of eating places and with its own brewery the town often has the aroma of hops pervading the air enticing you into one of its excellent inns.
places of interest
Jennings Brewery - take a guided tour round the local brewers which have been brewing traditional beers for over 170 years - highly recommended by myself is 'Golden Host'!
Wordsworth House - a recently restored georgian house where all five Wordsworth children were born. Winner of National Heritage Shoestring award in 1995.
Percy House Gallery - Contemporary Arts and Design in one of the towns oldest houses
Castlegate House Gallery - exhibitions of paintings, ceramics and sculptures.
